Area information
The modern seaside town of Hersonissos is situated 25 km east of Heraklion and is an extremely popular tourist resort.
Many attractions are available for visitors, starting with the local beaches. There are lots of water sport activities available here, including scuba diving and snorkelling. The water front also hosts numerous taverns, restaurants and shops. For a great family day trip there is the Aqua Plus Water Park which showcases giant slides, water rides and an adventure play area.
There is plenty of surviving evidence of the town’s history, including the Roman Port, Roman fountain and its beautiful mosaic and the central village square. Lychnostatis, the town’s open air museum, provides a fascinating account of life in Crete.
Heraklion city is easily accessed using one of the regular bus services. Visitors can explore the Archaeological Museum, Minoan Palaces, The Lions' fountains and Basilica of St. Markos, amongst other historical landmarks.
Night life is well catered for in Hersonissos and there is no shortage of bars and night clubs to keep party goers entertained until the sun comes back up.
